Once a small fishing village, the island resort of Sveti Stefan became one of the Montenegro’s most famous tourist centres that drew Hollywood stars and world royalty in the 60s and 70s, but fell into decline during a break up of the former Yugoslavia in 90s.
Dating from the 15th century, the island’s picturesque stone houses and cobbled streets are perched atop a large rock in the sea encircled by golden beaches and connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus.
It seems that Sveti Stefan's glory days are about to return as luxury resort operator Amanresorts signed a 30-year lease in 2007 and is currently pumping millions into the restoration of the island, its facilities and nearby hotel Milocer.
